The Columbia/Boone County Health Department attributes an increase in COVID-19 cases to an upswing in social gatherings among the 20-something crowd.
From Friday to Monday, the county logged 20 new positive cases. The city reports the majority of those cases were reported in those under the age of 30, and were transmitted by contact with a known case. The city says this indicates young people are no longer practicing social distancing and are once again coming together for social gatherings.
The city also reports the recent increase in cases has put a strain on health department case investigators. The city asks that if you’ve received a positive test result, immediately isolate at home and prepare a list of people you’ve had close contact with. The health department will contact you as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the city is currently drafting an ordinance that would require people to wear a mask in all public settings in Columbia. The city says it’s also researching options for a health order.
