A Jefferson City home is damaged by an early morning fire. Crews were called to a home on Monroe Street just before 6:30 this morning.
When they arrived, smoke was visible. While knocking down the fire, officials determined no one was home, but one dog died as the result of smoke inhalation.
Investigators say the fire started in a wastebasket, caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. It was also determined there were no working smoke alarms in the house.
A damage amount hasn't been released.
