Phelps County fire investigators are searching for an arsonist in and around the town of Newburg.

The Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District reports it’s worked about 20 intentionally set fires in that area over the last year or so; the most recent last Friday night involving a vacant mobile home.

The fires range from vehicle fires, to natural cover fires, to structure fires.  So far no injuries have been reported.

Many of the fires have targeted vacant structures.  But investigators say those fires still pose a risk.  With an increased population of homelessness, officials have to assume there’s a possibility that someone is living there, meaning they have to enter the structures to search for victims.

The fire department reports it’s incredibly difficult to catch arsonists unless someone sees something suspicious.  If you do, you’re asked to contact authorities immediately.
