Elderly Dent Co man survives drug-fueled axe attack

Wayne Head.

A Dent County man is arrested for attacking an elderly neighbor with high on drugs.

Wayne Head, 50, of Salem, was taken into custody Monday and charged with assault, burglary, and armed criminal action.  He's being held on a $200,000 cash-only bond.

According to court documents, it was early Monday when a 73-year-old Salem resident awoke to the sound of breaking glass.  As he walked down the hall, he was met by Head, who was armed with a long-handled axe.

The victim told deputies Head hit him several times in the head and arm.  The man said he fought Head to give his ten-year-old grandson time to escape.  The victim was able to escape and get himself and his grandson to a local convenience store, where deputies first responded.

The victim was treated and released from a local hospital.  Head was later taken into custody without incident at his mother's house.

Officials say Head was high on meth when the attack occurred.  He was allegedly breaking into the victim's house to find a gun.
