Former Fort Leonard Wood soldier killed by roadside bomb

Pfc. Miguel Villalon of Illinois was previously stationed at Fort Leonard Wood.

A soldier from the Chicago-suburbs, with ties to Fort Leonard Wood, is killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

The 82nd Airborne Division Paratroopers announced Sunday that 21-year-old Miguel Villalon died Saturday while conducting combat operations in Kandahar.  The incident remains under investigation, but officials say Villalon's vehicle struck an IED, killing Villalon and one other soldier, while injuring others.

Villalon joined the Army in 2018.  After completing several training programs at Fort Leonard Wood, he was assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he served as a combat engineer.  This was his first deployment.
