Jefferson City Parks is calling on volunteers to help clean up area parks. Every Thursday in April, volunteers will gather at a different park from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. to pick up trash. Cultural arts specialist Leann Porello says it’s time for residents to take back their parks.
“We’ve seen kind of a growth of trash around our highways and our parks, especially during the pandemic, with everyone kind of either being home or out in these public areas to do social distancing. So we’ve just seen an influx in trash.”
Porello says this is also a way to celebrate Earth Day, which his April 22.
At every event, a prize will be awarded to the person or group that picks up the most trash.
The first event is tomorrow at Riverside Park. Next on the list are McKay Park, Memorial Park and Washington Park.
There’s also a social media contest tied into this event. If you take pictures of yourself picking up trash any time during the month of April and use the hashtag #NOJCMOtrash, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a prize.
