Missouri House passes resolution denouncing U.S. Supreme Court decision denying Dred Scott his freedom

Dred Scott

The Missouri House formally denounces the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that denied citizenship to Dred Scott.

The GOP-lead House voted unanimously to condemn the decision earlier this week.  The court ruled in 1857 that Scott, an enslaved person, was not an American citizen and therefore couldn’t sue for his freedom in federal court.

The Missouri Senate previously passed a similar resolution, so now both chambers will have to agree on a single piece of legislation.

The House also gave final approval to a bill creating a specialty license plate to honor the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City.  The plate will be available for $15, with $10 going to the museum.
