The Missouri Supreme Court rules in favor of Medicaid expansion.
In a unanimous decision handed down today, the court ruled that the constitutional amendment voters approved to expand Medicaid did not violate the state constitution.
Last month, Cole County Judge Jon Beetem said the amendment violated the constitution because it did not include a funding source. But the state Supreme Court said the amendment was constitutional because it did not appropriate money and it did not remove the legislature’s discretion in appropriating funds.
The ruling from the court said “An initiative that simply costs money to implement does not necessarily require the appropriation of funds.”
The court remanded the case back to Cole County circuit court.
