Missouri Treasurer sues Secretary of State over ballot language in proposed amendment

Scott Fitzpatrick

The Missouri Treasurer is suing the secretary of state over a proposed constitutional amendment that would expand the treasurer’s powers.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reported that Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick sued fellow Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft.

The issue involved a proposed amendment that would change how Fitzpatrick’s office can invest taxpayer money.  He says this change would allow his office to earn higher interest.  He says the ballot language that Ashcroft’s office wrote is misleading, which could cause voters to reject it.

Ashcroft told the Dispatch he stands by the language, saying it’s fair, unbiased and clear.
