Negotiations to extend a Missouri nature trail that would eventually connect to the Katy Trail continue.

The U.S. Surface Transportation Board yesterday approved a request from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and Missouri Central Railroad to extend their negotiations until the end of the year.

The pair are working on a multi-phase project involving the Rock Island Trail which currently stretchers about 13 miles starting in Kansas City.

The project hopes to eventually bridge an eight-mile gap between the Rock Island Trail and the Katy Trail.

Current negotiations center on 144 miles of the former Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Corridor that stretches through Central Missouri, including the towns of Versailles, Eldon, and Freeburg.
