Pulaski County has begun the process of building a new jail.
Sheriff Jimmy Bench announced Thursday the county had accepted a bid to begin construction.
The new jail is funded by a law enforcement sales tax voters passed in 2016. The half-cent sales tax was expected to generate about $2 million per year. Thursday's bid wa for $14 million.
Bench says he's excited the long-awaited journey has finally begun. The new jail will house nearly twice as many inmates and will be state of the art - saving taxpayers' money.
No date has been set yet for a groundbreaking.
