One person dies in a crash last night, that shut down a section of I-70 in Columbia for hours.

The victim has been identified as Patrick Elsey, 26, of Boonville.

It was last night around 7 o’clock when officers were called to an accident that was blocking traffic on I-70, near the Range Line exit.  When they arrived, they located a second accident where a small car, driven by Elsey, had rear-ended a loaded semi-trailer which had stopped for traffic.

Elsey was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The other driver, a man from Texas, was uninjured and released from the scene.  Police say they have no reason to believe drugs or alcohol played a part in the wreck.
