The Pettis County Sheriff's Office has identified the man fatally shot during a police standoff last night.  The man has been identified as Jay Messer, 58, of LaMonte.

The sheriff's department reports they were called last night about a verbal domestic disturbance.  After making contact with the caller at a nearby home, deputies went to Messer's house on Oak Point Road.

When they arrived at the scene, deputies say Messer exited the home intoxicated, armed with a shotgun.  When officers ordered him to put the gun down, he refused and fired at them.  Law enforcement returned fire, striking Messer who was pronounced dead at the scene.  No officers were injured.
