Sedalia man charged with cousin's murder

Elijah Watts

A Pettis County man is facing a murder charge for shooting his cousin.

Elijah Watts, 27, of Sedalia, was taken into custody Sunday and charged earlier today with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm.  He's being held on a $500,000 bond.

It was late Saturday night when officers were called to an intersection just south of Smith Cotton Junior High to investigate reports of gunshots.  When police arrived, they found Adrian Clark, 25, laying in the road with four gunshots.  He died at the scene.

Police say Clark's girlfriend told them she, Clark, and Watts had been partying in Knob Noster when they decided to return home.  The woman told police both men were drunk.  She says when Watts called her later that evening, Clark was convinced the pair was having a relationship.  He then left his house to confront Watts.

The report of gunshots was reported shortly after Clark left his house.

Police say the gun believed to be used in the shooting was found on Watt's property.
