A special prosecutor is appointed to oversee a case involving two Columbia Police officer’s use of force earlier this month outside a downtown bar.
The incident occurred early in the morning on May 7 on South 10th Street. Video was captured as two officers punched and wrestled with a man on the sidewalk. Both officers have since quit the department.Â
According to court records, Boone County Prosecutor Roger Johnson requested a special prosecutor to oversee the criminal investigation, noting his regular collaboration with the police department. He says he wanted to avoid any appearance of impropriety.
In response to Johnson’s request, a Boone County judge appointed Cooper County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Phelps to act as special prosecutor.Â
