One person dies and another is seriously injured in unrelated police chases in Mid-Missouri.

The fatality happened around 2 a.m. this morning in Columbia, just west of the downtown.  Police were pursuing Hayden Holt, 17, when he wrecked near the intersection of Providence and Locust, striking a utility pole and overturning.  Holt, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second chase was reported about an hour later in Miller County.  Preston Cash, 22, of Eldon, was trying to outrun deputies when he lost control of his cr about four miles north of Lake Ozark.  The Patrol reports Cash's car overturned and landed on its top.

Cash and two passengers suffered moderate injuries.  However, one passenger, Douglas Cornelius, 35, of Eldon, suffered serious injuries.  There's no word on his condition.

Law enforcement from neither Columbia nor Miller County have clarified what prompted both chases.
