University of Missouri System President unblocks students after threat of lawsuit

University of Missouri System President Mun Choi draws criticism for blocking students on Twitter.

The Columbia Missourian reports Choi allegedly blocked the accounts because of profanity and derogatory comments about the university’s COVID-19 policies.  Choi has since unblocked the accounts.

The Missourian reports Mizzou alumnus and Texas attorney Christopher Bennett stepped in to represent the students, pro bono.  Bennett sent a letter to the university this week, saying if Choi didn’t unblock the students, he’d face a lawsuit.

Bennett called Choi’s actions “unlawful”, citing a federal case involving President Donald Trump’s Twitter account.  In that case the court ruled that social media accounts used for official purposes must still adhere to rights held under the First Amendment.
