UPDATED: Murder of Sturgeon man appears to be random with no motive

Joseph Hecht

UPDATE:  Marlin Johnson is described as 5'10", with brown eyes, dreads, and tattoos on his left shoulder and right forearm.  He weighs approximately 160 lbs.

Police warn Johnson should be considered armed and dangerous.  If you know of his whereabouts, you're asked to call Columbia PD or Crime Stoppers at 573-875-TIPS to remain anonymous.

Court documents state it appears a Sturgeon man’s shooting death last weekend in Columbia was a random act of violence.

Joseph Hecht, 38, of Sturgeon, was walking across a crosswalk in the downtown, early Saturday morning.  Witnesses told police a car stopped a few feet in front of Hecht, words were exchanged, then a pop was heard, and Hecht fell to the ground.  He died at a Columbia hospital the following day.

Two men are charged with Hecht’s murder.  One, 23-year-old Kesan McNeal, was arrested Sunday.  His alleged accomplice, 24-year-old Marlin Johnson, remains at large.  Both men are charged with second-degree murder.

Surveillance footage from an area business shows a brief conversation between Hecht and the suspects, followed by a shot fired from the suspect’s car.  Police say evidence indicates the shooting was done to a random person with no apparent motive.

Hecht leaves behind a wife and two young daughters.  A GoFund Me account has been established to help Hecht’s family.
